Ro Khanna is a one of the candidates running for Congress to represent California’s 17th district in the next year. Born in, he is the son of first-generation Indian immigrants, and his grandfather worked alongside Ghandi to fight for civil rights and freedom. Ro worked for President Obama and Gary Locke as Deputy Assistant Secretary to brings jobs into the U.S. and improve China-US trade relations.

Currently we are experiencing the consequences of a federal government shutdown and Ro explains that Congress’s behavior has been completely unacceptable. The purpose of Congress is to represent and take care of the people of the U.S. by keeping schools funded, preventing tax increases, maintaining partnerships with China and America, and more.

However right now due to the shutdown, the majority of federal government employees have been furloughed and small businesses are being hurt as a consequence, yet members of Congress are still getting paid.

Ro explains that it is crucial to remember the reason why one serves in Congress is to help the public rather than take advantages of the system.

He believes that the way to recover our current situation in the government is to promote small businesses and entrepreneurs by lowering taxes, supporting and strengthening education by bringing new technology into classrooms and increasing course options and funding, and maintaining and building strategic partnerships between the Chinese, Indian and American cultures.

Having taught as a professor at Stanford University and Santa Clara University, and written a book on business and the importance of entrepreneurship in the Silicon Valley,

Ro sees the potential and necessity in intercultural connections and collaboration. Rather than receiving funding from special interest groups or lobbyists, Ro’s campaign has been supported solely by small businesses and entrepreneurs (many of Chinese-American background) in the Silicon Valley.

Ro strongly supports and works towards a solution that uses sustainable business practices as the key to fixing our economy and strengthening our communities in California. Elections for Congress will be held next June 4, 2014.
