On October 28, Director Wu Chih-Hsiang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco was invited to attend the “Republic of China (Taiwan) Day” recognition ceremony held by the San Jose City Council.
The ceremony was co-hosted by San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and City Councilmember Peter Ortiz, who sponsored the proclamation. Nearly 50 local officials, business leaders, and community representatives attended, creating a solemn yet warm atmosphere.
In his remarks, Director Wu expressed his great honor in witnessing the San Jose City Council’s proclamation of October 25 as “Republic of China (Taiwan) Day.” On behalf of the people of Taiwan, he conveyed sincere gratitude for this meaningful recognition. He extended special thanks to San Jose—a city renowned for its cultural diversity and innovative spirit—for its long-standing support of Taiwan and the Taiwanese-American community. Wu noted that Taiwanese Americans have long made outstanding contributions to the cultural, technological, and economic development of San Jose and the greater Bay Area. The proclamation, he said, highlights the deep friendship shared between both sides based on common values of freedom, human rights, and democracy, and he looked forward to continued friendship and cooperation in the years ahead.
In a joint statement, Mayor Matt Mahan, Councilmember Peter Ortiz, and all members of the San Jose City Council officially declared October 25, 2025, as “Republic of China (Taiwan) Day,” recognizing the significant contributions of the Taiwanese-American community to the city, the lasting sister-city relationship between San Jose and Tainan established in 1977, and the efforts of the Chinese American Historical Foundation in restoring the Chinese Cultural Garden at Overfelt Gardens Park—originally built in the 1970s with support from the Republic of China (Taiwan).
Following the announcement, Mayor Mahan presented the official proclamation to Director Wu on behalf of the city. All council members were present, and many leaders from the local Taiwanese community were invited to join the ceremony, which was grand and ceremonious.
