1864年6月30日，總統Abraham Lincoln將國會一項法案簽署成為法律，Yosemeite Valley and Mariposa Grove由此成為地球曆史上第一個野外保護區。

1890年，這兩個地塊周圍的土地被指定為Yosemite National Park，Sequoia在同一年也成為國家公園。

Yosemite、Sequoia、Yellowstone和Mackinac成為美國首批四個國家公園。

1906年，在加州最著名伐木工人John Muir敦促下，總統Theodore Roosevelt和加州將Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove 與Yosemite National Park合並。
