Daly City Mayor David Canepa announces plans for 2014
David Canepa was recently appointed as the new mayor of Daly City on December 9th, 2013. He sat in with us at News for Chinese to review and discuss recent accomplishments in 2013 and his plans for 2014.
Economic Growth
Mayor Canepa explained that economic growth in Daly City is steadily growing, especially with the optimism trickling in from San Francisco’s recent economic performance. Without the anti-chain store policy in several San Francisco neighborhoods, Daly City is proud to announce the planned opening of the popular Japanese clothing retailer, UNIQLO, in Serramonte. In addition, Daly City is very supportive of small businesses and their growth and development. The community worked together to save Westlake Coffee Shop this year, owned by Daly City local Moon Choi in Westlake, when they were forced to close because their rent jumped from $4000 to $14,000. The city was able to find an affordable space next to the Century 20 Theatres on Junipero Serra Boulevard for relocation, and West Lake Coffee will have a re-grand opening in February or March of this year.
Reinventing Mission Street
Daly City has always lacked a true downtown and city center. Mayor Canepa announced the city’s plans to renovate the city’s Mission Street district into a more urban and lively area. Several large development projects are in the works, including Lennar’s 91 housing unit plan in St. Francis Heights that has already been approved for 2014 and a 250 unit mixed-use plan that will hopefully be approved in the near future. 12 of the 91 units will qualify as affordable housing for teachers, fire fighters and business owners. In addition, Daly City continues to try to bring external investments into the city for business and residential development, as well as improving existing city services and utilities.
Cultural Commission
Mayor Canepa announced the creation of Daly City’s first Cultural Commission. The mission of this commission is to celebrate the different cultures of Daly City and to bring the community together through events. The goal is to bring more of the Asian community into City Hall, including Chinese, Filipinos, and Burmese (which Daly City boasts the highest population of alongside Fremont). Mayor Canepa hopes to host receptions and welcome several cultural dance and performing groups to Daly City during this year.
In addition to the optimistic plans for 2014, also come heavy responsibilities. A tight 2-year budget and pressure from rising pension and employee benefit regulations force cutting down of the city’s 500 employees. A decision will be made on the status of these cuts by July 1st, 2014 as the city council continues to work with labor groups to come to an agreement.
Mayor David Canepa is very excited for his new term as mayor of Daly City. He continues to fulfill his role as an active council member by attending events around the community and taking care of the most immediate needs of his city. He will support growth through increased job opportunities (UNIQLO’s opening will bring 70 new jobs and Lennar 120 new jobs), city development, and cultural celebration and diversity.
