On October 8, 2025, the Chinese community in the San Francisco Bay Area celebrated a grand National Day celebration in Foster City, drawing nearly a thousand attendees from across the region. The event symbolized the enduring heritage of Chinese culture abroad and served as an important platform for cultural connection and unity within the local Chinese community.

The celebration took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Foster City, a convenient venue equipped with full stage, lighting, and sound facilities. The event began at 4 p.m. with the flag procession led by Republic of China veterans, followed by the U.S. and ROC national anthems, sung under the direction of Director Wu Chih-hsiang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco. Director Wu delivered opening remarks in fluent English, expressing gratitude for the community’s support and receiving warm applause from the audience.

Several distinguished guests and community leaders attended, including Evan Reade representing California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Cupertino Mayor Hung Wei, Councilmember Shao Yang, and former Mayor Darcy Gao. The event also featured booths showcasing Taiwanese culture and cuisine, offering tastings that added a festive touch to the evening.

Many attendees shared afterward that the celebration was deeply moving. Some said it was their first time joining a National Day event in the Bay Area and that it made them feel “at home” even while living abroad. They expressed hope to take part in the celebration every year.

Director Wu Chih-hsiang’s speech

Distinguished guests and friends,

Good evening.

It is my honor and privilege to stand before you today as host of the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s 114th National Day reception. Since arriving in the Bay Area two weeks ago, I have been deeply touched by your warmth and friendship. I look forward to working with leaders and partners across Northern California, Nevada, and Utah to deepen our shared cooperation.

Over the years, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco has worked closely with local partners to strengthen exchanges and collaboration across multiple sectors. Politically, the California Senate has passed pro-Taiwan resolutions for two consecutive years and even led a delegation to Taiwan last year—the first visit by Senate leaders in 18 years. In May, Nevada’s legislature formed the Nevada-Taiwan Friendship Caucus, and last year Taiwan became the first foreign government to sign a driver’s license reciprocity agreement with Utah. A joint delegation of legislative leaders from Nevada and Utah is also scheduled to visit Taiwan next year.

Economically and technologically, our office continues to support Taiwanese businesses investing locally and recruiting Silicon Valley talent, while facilitating training for Taiwan startups at world-class accelerator centers such as Stanford and UC Berkeley. We also work to deepen Taiwan’s dialogue with Silicon Valley and strengthen supply chain integration in high-tech sectors.

Culturally, we have co-hosted “Taiwan Heritage Night” with the San Francisco Giants and sponsored the San Francisco International Film Festival—initiatives that have enhanced the cultural connection and mutual understanding between the people of Taiwan and the United States.

Thanks to these efforts, Taiwan-U.S. relations continue to grow stronger. Beyond visits by U.S. lawmakers and governors, Congress has introduced several bipartisan bills supporting Taiwan, including the U.S.-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, the Taiwan International Solidarity Act, and resolutions opposing China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758. These actions reflect bipartisan consensus in supporting Taiwan’s security and resisting China’s pressure.

In trade and investment, the Taiwan-U.S. partnership has reached new heights. The United States has overtaken China as Taiwan’s top destination for overseas investment. Bilateral trade grew by 34% in 2024 to reach USD 150 billion, while Taiwanese investment in the U.S. rose by 45% to USD 14 billion—most of it in the semiconductor sector. Taiwan is a key strategic partner for the U.S. in AI and emerging technologies, a win-win relationship that strengthens America’s leadership in the AI era and creates new global opportunities for Taiwan.

We also appreciate continued support from both the U.S. administration and Congress for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations such as the WHO, ICAO, and Interpol. This support demonstrates our shared democratic values and affirms Taiwan as a reliable and responsible partner. According to Freedom House, Taiwan ranks as Asia’s second-freest country, and the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking places Taiwan sixth globally and first among economies with over 20 million people for five consecutive years.

I would like to highlight the vital role of Taiwanese-American communities across the Bay Area, Nevada, and Utah. As Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu has said, “Everyone is a diplomat.” Through your professional achievements, cultural contributions, and community service, you have amplified Taiwan’s visibility and strengthened our connections with the U.S. and the world. Looking ahead, we aim to engage even more deeply with younger generations of Taiwanese Americans and ensure that Taiwan’s voice continues to resonate across communities and generations.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my great pleasure to celebrate this National Day with all of you tonight. Thank you for your long-standing support, which continues to strengthen the Taiwan-U.S. partnership. May our friendship grow ever stronger and lead to even more opportunities for collaboration and understanding.

Thank you, and I wish you all a wonderful evening.
