News for Chinese gets a first-hand look at American Airline’s new Airbus A321 Transcontinental
American Airlines is bringing back glamour and luxury with its introduction of the Airbus A321, flying direct between San Francisco International Airport, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport. The airline, which merged with US Airways last year, is taking steps to rebuild their reputation of modern, top-service flights in the airline industry. News for Chinese was able to get a tour of the A321T before it takes off for the first time today, from SFO to JFK.
The A321T is full of new technology and style for its First and Business Class flyers; from fully lie-flat beds, noise-cancelling Bose headphones, touch-screen handset, 15.4 inch screen TVs and air-to-ground WiFi throughout the plane, to automatic sinks and slate floors in the lavatories. American Airlines is the first to feature three separate cabins for a domestic flight: First Class, Business Class, and Main Cabin. First and Business Class customers also have the option to reserve an entree in advance of their flight. The A321T also features impressive upgrades to the plane’s piloting system. It has omitted the traditional “yoke”, the steering wheel of the plane, and upgraded it to a side-stick device. American Airline pilots Captain Jeff Leng and Sung Cho explained that this enables them to maintain control of the plane along with automated piloting so they can safely monitor the situation within and outside the cockpit.
First Class Cabin:
American’s First Class onboard the A321T features 10 fully lie-flat seats with spacious room when in the upright position, and full aisle access. All seats are equipped with a universal AC power outlet and USB jack, as well as complimentary entertainment section of up to 200 movies, 180 TV programs, 350 audio selections, and 20+ games on 15.4 inch touch-screen monitors.
First Class flyers experience gourmet inflight dining options, with a completely new menu of entrees, appetizers, salads and desserts, along with espresso and cappuccino service. For morning flights, brunch service is offered, and for overnight flights, a light gourmet dinner and wake-up breakfast with fruit smoothies and warmed breakfast breads will be provided. All First Class customers also receive a complimentary toiletry kit with Akhassa skincare products.
Business Class Cabin:
The Business Class cabin is outfitted with 20 fully lie-flat seats arranged in paired configuration. Like First Class, all seats are equipped with universal AC power outlets and USB ports. Business class flyers also choose from the gourmet inflight dining options, and have access to the complete entertainment system via 15.4 inch HD-capable tilting touch-screen monitors.
Main Cabin and Main Cabin Extra:
The main cabin is outfitted with 36 Main Cabin Extra seats, which feature an extra 6 inches of leg room, and 36 standard Main Cabin seats in rows of 3 by 3. All seats are equipped with universal AC power outlets and USB jacks. Main Cabin Extra flyers also receive early boarding privileges. All Main Cabin Extra and Main Cabin customers will be able to enjoy full complimentary in-seat entertainment through March 31, 2014. After the complimentary period, guests will have the options of complimentary content, pay-to-access packages, or pay-per-view movies. All purchases made inflight can be paid for with credit card, as no cash is accepted.
Starting today, the A321T Airbus will begin making regular trips between SFO, JFK, and LAX international airports. In addition to all the impressive gadgets and design, American Airlines did not leave out the most important thing: unforgettable service. During our tour, all the air stewards and stewardesses were incredibly helpful in explaining the details of each feature and seat, with huge smiles and friendly conversation. Hopefully we will be able to grab a seat in the First Class cabin next time we visit the East Coast!
